Today’s
pool halls are no longer the places you remember from the Broadway
show, “The Music Man”, or the movie, “The
Hustler” starring, Jackie Gleason and Paul Newman. The memories of
those pool halls will live forever in the minds of those
generations.
And
how many of us remember those University days when one could not
graduate without having competed, or hustled, for beer money at the
Student Union? How many hours were spent there waiting for the next
class to begin? If not at The Union then the table at the fraternity
house or local YMCA, all of which beckoned us to gently place those
colored balls against the rail where the opponent would not have a
shot. How many times has that dreaded eight-ball dropped before it was
intended?
The
real hustlers even played on a table without pockets and called it
snooker, or straight billiards. These players might even have a
table at home in their “rec.” room where they would display
their trophies and show you their special cues, inlaid with five
kinds of wood. Purists, today, will tell you that the billiard table
has no pockets and that the players rely on finesse, or “carom.”
Today’s
pool halls are usually found in sports centers, or strip malls, and
cater to families, as well as late night workers who are looking for
relaxation and amusement after their evening shifts are over. What
better way to share a few drinks and take a couple of hours to
remember those long ago self-taught lessons?
For
years there have been leagues and tournaments that attract players
from all over the world, and offer the chance to play in Las Vegas
or the Bahamas and, in recent years, at local native American
casinos.
But
one does not have to go overseas or even out of town. There are
several billiard halls in Martin County where one can play for fun
or competition. One of them, recently under new management, is AMY’S
BILLIARDS at 1600 NW Federal Highway in Stuart. This,
newly renovated, billiard hall has fourteen tables of various sizes,
all newly covered. They can be rented by the hour or by the game.
While waiting for your turn to play, you can listen to the music or
watch one of the several TVs, and have a drink of your favorite
beverage. Beer and wine and light snacks are available, but if you
look as young as you feel, you may be asked to show identification!
